Temporary Berths
THE NEW TEMPORARY BERTHS SYSTEM IS NOW OPERATING - BERTHS CAN BE OFFERED AND REQUESTED FROM 1ST APRIL 2025
The Temporary Berths scheme enables Weevil Berth Holders to offer up their berth to other members when they vacate it for a period from 1 night / 2 days to 14 nights / 15 days, between 1st April and 31st October. For a short daytime stay, book an Amenity Berth instead and from 15 nights / 16 days, the Short Term Sublet process applies. Temporary berths at Weevil Lake can be very useful to members, so all permanent (or ASL) mooring holders are encouraged to always make their berth available when not in use. Even just a single overnight period could help someone expedite a quick maintenance task that requires workshop access for instance.
All Non-POG mooring holders are required to make a contribution of £5 per night for the use of a Temporary Berth. POG mooring holders (including Burrow Island, Haslar and Wicor) do not need to make this contribution. The contribution is made by purchasing one or more 'Trusted Contribution' items in the 'Temporary Berthing' section of the online Shop. These fees are returned to POG funds, not the permanent mooring holder. You may pay for a temporary berth after it has completed to avoid the complication of applying for a refund due to the berth holder returning early. Please be aware that payments are periodically cross-checked against bookings made.
Members using a Temporary Berth will require their own Smart Card with a credit balance to access electrical power.
Be aware that the Temporary Berths system works through a database that is external to the main website database. The moorings team will endeavour to keep this external database synchronised with the main database in terms of new members, changes to contact details, replacement boats and new part-year sublets. However at times there may be a lag of up to around 13 days.
Offering a Temporary Berth
There are two ways to make your berth available as a Temporary Berth;
- In advance of departure, though the 'Offer or Request a Berth' form below. You will receive a response by email, which will confirm whether you have successfully made your berth available, or if not, the reason why.
- At the time of departure, by sending a Text (SMS) message to 07520 615378 indicating your planned return date and time in the format 24jul1600 (that is, two digit date, three letter month and 4 digit time on the 24-hour clock). The all-numeric equivalent format 24071600 is also now accepted. You will receive a response by text. This method will only work if you use the FIRST mobile phone number that is registered to you on your profile page.
Finding and Requesting a Temporary Berth
Available and already-booked Temporary Berths are shown on the calendar on this page below the form (blue availability slots and red booked slots). Be aware that you will find a better selection of berths available if you check prior to your departure than if you try and book days in advance, as most members do not declare their berth available until they are ready to leave. Available berths show their length and width (in m), which you can compare with your boat's LOA and beam to know if a particular berth is large enough. (Note that the dimensions shown are berth dimensions, not the dimensions of the permanent boat).
Temporary berths can be requested through the 'Offer or Request a Berth' form below.
You will receive a response by email which will confirm whether you have successfully secured a temporary berth booking, or if not, the reason why. If you have secured a berth the email will contain contact details of the berth holder, and the berth holder will also be sent your contact details.
Tips for Success
Please take care completing the form and double-check the information entered before submitting.
- Your POG number should be 2, 3 or 4 digits (without leading zeros) and your postcode should be capital letters, numbers and one space (e.g. PO12 1AZ), exactly how it appears in your profile page.
- The end date must be at least 1 day after the start date, but no more than 14 nights, and the entire period must be within 1st April to 31st October.
- If requesting a berth, ensure your request is within the availability slot of a berth on the calendar, in terms of both dates AND times (to see the end time, click on the available berth in the calendar).
- Also ensure your boat will fit within the berth's dimensions (note that where more than one berth is available, you will be allocated the smallest berth that is large enough for your boat).
- It is NOT possible for a single booking to span multiple availability slots.
- The system allows multiple bookings in one long availability slot for a given berth. This could even include up to 2 non-adjacent bookings by the same boat, such as consecutive weekends. For adjacent bookings in the same berth, there must be a minimum separation of 4 hours between the bookings; this gap must be complied with in the request for a berth.
Cancelations and Amendments
When you make a berth available, your confirmation email will contain simple instructions to enable you to cancel the berth offer (pressing reply and send). If you only wish to amend the availability dates, simply cancel the first offer and resubmit a new form. Note that it is not possible to cancel an offer that has a booking against it. In this case, contact the berth taker directly if you want to amend the start or end date/time (subject to 2 hours notice for an early finish if the booking has already commenced).
If you have booked a berth, you will be able to cancel the berth by the same simple email process providing the booking has not yet started.
If you are unable to cancel or amend an offer or booking please contact Moorings. Note that it is POG policy to not offer curtailments of Temporary Berth bookings that have already commenced except in exceptional circumstances.
Terms and Conditions of Temporary Berths
There are a number of terms and conditions associated with Temporary Berths, as laid out in Standing Orders (sections A8.2 and A8.3). Two critical ones are;
- MEMBERS USING A TEMPORARY BERTH MUST BE IN A POSITION TO MAKE IT AVAILABLE AT 2 HOURS NOTICE. IF THE PERMANENT BERTH HOLDER CONTACTS YOU AND ASKS YOU TO VACATE WITH THIS NOTICE, YOU MUST DO SO.
- There is a cap on the total number of nights a member may book Temporary Berths over the course of a season of 30 nights.
- You are not permitted to have more than 2 active temporary berth or amenity berth bookings (the temporary berths system will prevent more that 2 temporary berth bookings).
