We regret to announce the death of John Crump, an early club member and POG Vice Commodore in the 1990s. He was involved in the installation of the first pontoon after our second main dredge when we still had pile moorings.

John was an imposing man at about 6ft 5ins and he towered above most others but as with many with his stature, he was very sociable and helpful and played an important part in the development of POG.

He first bought HOPE, a Nicholson 31 but he and Jean later moved to the Isle of Wight for a few years retaining their POG memberships. John bought a Colin Archer40 with a 7 ft bowsprit which he kept on piles in Yarmouth harbour. He loved that boat but without a strong crew it proved impossible for them to manage, and it was exchanged for a Westerly Fulmar. John was Rear Commodore House at the Royal Solent YC for several years, a job he did well and much enjoyed.

During his stay on the Island, he arranged the POG Yarmouth Rally for many years. This involved a sail from POG to Yarmouth, lunch at the Royal Solent Yacht Club with magnificent views across to Lymington, and then back to POG in the afternoon.

Whilst on the Island, the couple bought a villa in Spain and spent 9 years going to and fro. They explored Andalucía in an old MGB but didn't buy a boat there. On their return to the UK and POG, John bought an elderly Nauticat 33, TACKLEAWAY, but very quickly his desire was for a newer Nauticat, a 331, so he bought SKYLER which he kept on row A for several years. Finally, he bought a Nauticat 37, which John loved and they moved house again and took the boat to Hayling Island.

Very sadly, John had little time to sail the boat before Covid arrived and then he was struck down with cancer which he fought very bravely until his death on 2nd October at the age of 84.

John's funeral will be at 11.30 on Monday, 11th November at The Oaks Crematorium, Havant PO9 5NA, followed by his wake at Emsworth Sailing Club PO10 7ES. John's wife Jean and the rest of his family extend a warm welcome to all POG friends who would like to attend.
